Notes: Character perspective for Brother's Keeper.

Nathan was afraid. He didn’t like it, but it was an improvement over being confused. The past several weeks had been so very confusing. He tried to talking to his mother, but she insisted he was going through his mid-life crisis, and that getting laid would solve everything. That in and of itself told Nathan that something was very, very wrong. He knew it, and he could tell that Peter knew it too.

He watched from his desk when Rene came in and basically ordered him to stay away. Nathan didn’t like that at all. He didn’t like being ordered around, and he hated it in his own office. But Peter went along with it, so he brooded and waited for Rene to have his say. He heard most of the conversation, and he didn’t like that the Haitian wanted Peter to go alone. Nathan had no doubt that Peter would jump in head first into whatever danger it was. Peter never had enough common sense. With or without amazing powers, Peter Petrelli was too damn fearless for his own good, and Nathan hated that too.

When Peter asked him to fly to find the storage unit, Nathan didn’t question it. He knew he’d never been there before. No images of his life danced in his head when he touched the locks, but he saw Rene. He saw Noah, and he saw Angela, sobbing and trembling.

“I’m not sure this is a good idea, Peter,” he wasn’t sure if he said it or not.

“Mom’s involved, Nathan. Of course it’s not a good idea, but Rene said I had to see what was inside. You coming with me or not?” Peter wasn’t afraid not yet. He was curious. He had to know the truth, because Nathan’s weirdness was starting to bug him. He didn’t like that Nathan was showing powers that Sylar had. Sylar was dead. He’d watched his body burn, but something was still wrong. Both the Petrelli brothers knew it.

It wasn’t until Peter watched Nathan’s hands tremble at whatever was in the freezer that Peter began to understand what fear was. He didn’t want to see what had spooked his brother so completely. Nathan looked confused, hurt and betrayed. Peter knew that the answers were inside that silver casket wrapped in plastic.

When Peter saw Nathan’s body, the lips blue, the crude stitches along his throat he knew fear that made his bones ache. He swallowed bile, and did what came natural for the Petrellis. He tried to lie to himself that it was a trick, but he knew. Peter knew that it was the truth. Nathan was dead, and he was hanging onto a lie. Ice spread through Peter’s soul, brittle and cold, making him step back while he shuddered.
