I’m so cold. The explosion took every bit of warmth from me along with all the lives I took. All I wanted to do was save the world, to stop Sylar, and I failed. Seeing Hiro run him through was the last good thing I saw.

“Dammit, Claire,” I mumbled into the thin pillow on the slab of cement they call my bed. “Why didn’t you do it? Why didn’t you kill me in time?”

“Peter. Good you’re awake.” I looked up through the reinforced window at my mother. As usual she looked like she’d been sucking a cup of lemons with a dash of tea.

“Not anymore, Peter. You’ve been given medication to block your abilities…” Her arms were folded, and she tapped her perfect nails on her sleeves. “You’ll live a normal if uneventful life here and eventually die.”

“Nathan won’t let you do this to me!” I pounded the flat of my hands on the glass. “He won’t!”

“He already did, Peter.” Her cold dead eyes locked with mine. “Nathan knew about the explosion before it happened. He let you blow up, Peter. It was important for his career. You’ve done a good thing for Nathan, dear. Now he can become president.”

“Nathan…” My hands slid down the glass as I watched my mother stroll away. My whole body trembled as the cold seeped into my soul. I killed thousands, and my brother, my hero, let me.
