“Christ, Nathan, you’re making my eyes water. Do you think you drank enough?” His breath hit me from across the room. “You are not the only man on earth who’s been dumped.”

“I’m Nathan Petrelli. I do not get dumped. I am the dumper never the dumpee.” He groaned when I took the bottle from him and tugged him to his feet. “Where are we going?”

“You’re taking a shower, then you’re going to bed.”

“With you?” He pressed his lips against mine and tightened his grip on me.

“Yeah with me. Come on if Ma sees you, we’re dead.”

I can do this. I had the dream. I know I can fly. I swallowed the five pound lump of fear in my throat and looked down into the alley below. It was so far beneath my feet. I pulled out my phone, calling Nathan again. He was taking too long to get here. He had to see that I could fly.

Knew he wouldn’t believe me unless I proved it to him. He wouldn’t believe me if I told him the sky was blue unless I dragged him out to see it with his own eyes. He will believe.

I had the shell in my hand. The tide was choppy, and I had to kick really hard to get back to the reef. I was getting tired. But I wanted to give mom the sea urchin shell she’d love it.

I looked into the rocks and saw the eel. It was huge, and it was looking right at me. I sucked in my breath, drawing salty water into my lungs. Choking and sputtering I tried to swim, but I couldn’t move.

Next thing I knew I was coughing up water on the beach, and Nathan was leaning over me.

I leaned close, brushing my lips against hers. She smelled like suntan lotion, coconut and bananas all wrapped up in bubblegum and cotton candy. I could taste a hint of strawberry ice cream when we kissed, and I knew I’d love her forever.

“I love you, Beth.”

“I love you, Peter.”

There was a plop and something cold hit my foot. Breaking the kiss, I looked down to see my mint chocolate chip ice cream on the sand. If I was six instead of twenty-six, it would have made me cry, but more kisses from Bethany took care of that.

They were kissing. The sun was shimmering on the lake, and Nathan was kissing Kelly again. I was so bored. He was supposed to go swimming with me, but oh no he had to suck face with his stupid girlfriend.

When they sat down on the end of the dock, I got so mad. Mom and dad told him I couldn’t go in the water unless he was watching, and sticking his tongue in her mouth was not watching.

“Nathan!!!!”

I ran down the dock, fast as I could, and barreled into him. We hit the water with a splash.

The boat was rocking too much, and I felt my stomach lurch. This was not the graduation party I expected at all, and I was wishing to hell that I hadn’t agreed to it. Big boats were supposed to be better, but I could barely let go of the rail to look at my date.

She rubbed the space between my shoulder blades as I puked one more time. I turned and sank down onto the deck, leaning my head against the lifesaver like it was a pillow.

“I’m sorry. Hell of a way to ruin a romantic night, huh?”

“I don’t feel good, Nathan,” I said, holding my stomach before puking into the petunias near the patio. “I’m all wobbly, and my head is spinning.”

Nathan wrinkled his nose, looking at what had come out of me. “Pete, what have you been drinking?”

“I had some of grandma’s ice tea when she was talking to mom. It’s hot, and I was thirsty. It tasted funny, but it was cold.”

“Little brother.” He reached over and rubbed the space between my shoulder blades. “Lesson number 24, never drink from a Petrelli woman’s glass. It’s not what you think it is.”

My desk was covered in applications to universities with good pre-law programs. Of course dad said I needn’t bother with any of that. I could go to school where he did, and where Nathan did. Then I could join the firm, and become a productive member of the Petrelli family.

“I don’t want this.” I put my head on my desk in the middle of the application I’d half filled out and let out a deep breath.

Reaching into my bottom drawer I pulled out the completed nursing school application, and put a stamp on it. “It’s my life, sorry.”

“Pretend you’re having a good time, Nathan.” He frowned at me from behind the barbeque, then smiled as a reporter pointed a camera at him. “Nathan Petrelli makes better hamburgers. Vote for him because he believes in family values.”

“Do I detect sarcasm, Pete?” The fake smile flashed again as he dropped a charred burger on a bun.

“I don’t know, Nathan. Were my lips moving?”

“I’m just trying to get elected. I don’t need you to be my moral compass.”

I let out snort and stared at him over my sunglasses. “God knows someone needs to fill that void.”

My lungs hurt. I was gulping in as much air as I could, but it didn’t seem like enough. My legs were turning to rubber. They were used to me being late, but this time I’d promised to be on time. I’d promised to be early, but then the cab broke down and I had to run.

Fuck my life.

I was late for Nathan’s wedding!

I came crashing through the doors of the church, trying to get to the altar in time to take my place next to Nathan. Dad scowled at me from his seat, but Nathan smiled.

“Pitching a tent, Petreli,” Harry laughed then went deathly still at the sounds of snorting and giggles coming from Nathan’s closet. “Your little brother’s spying on you again, Nathan.”

“Peter Petrelli!” Nathan grabbed the copy of Playboy they’d been looking at and shoved it under the mattress. “I’m going to kick your ass. Then I’m going to tell dad you were in here again.”

“Will not!” Inside the closet, Peter scrambled to hide behind Nathan’s clothes before his big brother opened the door. “I’ll tell dad.”

“If I let you look too, will you keep your mouth shut?”

“Uh huh.”

“Peter, I don’t know how you stand it.”

I let out a sigh as the neighbor’s headboard slammed into the wall between my bedroom and theirs, then went back to sipping my coffee. “I’m not usually home this time of day, so it doesn’t bother me, ma.”

Angela pursed her lips, got up, and stomped out the door. I took a big gulp and took off after her. “Ma I have to live next door to these people.”

“Then they should learn to be considerate.” Her knocking echoed up and down the hallway. “We know you’re home. So does God.”

“I know where we’re going, Peter.” Sylar glared at me from behind the wheel. The map was crumpled on the backseat of the car where he’d tossed it. “Eidetic memory.”

“I’m not comfortable with that. That map was pretty old. We could get lost.” I hate it out here in the middle of nowhere. Brown sand and scrub brush for miles on end, and no matter how many miles we’ve traveled the horizon looks no closer.

“We’re in the middle of the desert. Do you want me to pull over so you can fly up and look around?”

“Could you?”

“I feel like shit. This sucks, Pete.” Nathan sneezed and dropped back onto his pillow with a disgusted groan. “I want to take you out on the lake.”

“We can go when you feel better. We’re here for the summer. We’ve got plenty of time.” Hate seeing him sick. “Besides you saved me from going shopping with Ma. She wanted me to meet some daughter of a friend for lunch.”

“Wish I could say I was faking this to save you from that fate.”

“Yeah?” I climbed up on the bed, handing him the Kleenex. “You’re the best brother, Nathan.”

“Nathan something’s wrong with the cat. She’s screaming.” I tugged on his arm, dragging him through the mansion out to the cook’s house. It was hot, and the bees were buzzing around everywhere, but you couldn’t miss the cat yowling. “I think she’s dying.”

Nathan stopped and looked down at me, his eyes lighting up before he started to laugh. “Ah Pete, let me explain to you about the birds and the bees.”

“Sex? You want to talk about sex? What about Doris? She’s sick.”

“She’s not sick. She’s in heat.” Nathan didn’t blush the whole time, but I did.

The tape made a snerck sound while I yanked off another piece. It was too short, so I pulled off more and more. I kept wiping my eyes because I was sniffling. I wrapped more tape around the vase, trying to get the stupid handles to stay where they belonged.

I had all the pieces on the carpet, and the crumpled, broken flowers that had been in it. I let out a meep as I heard someone walk past the door, and I ducked behind the sofa to finish.

“Peter Petrelli what are you doing in here?”

“Nothing. Hi Ma."

“You should tell them you stopped the end of the world, Peter.” Sylar leaned close to me; our shoulder’s bumping, while the reporters swarmed around Claire for her story.

“We stopped the end of the world,” I reminded him. “You did good too, and I don’t need anyone to know what I did. Do you?”

“I used to not anymore.” He let out a sigh, and then shook his head. “She always wanted a normal life, and now she’ll never have one.”

“None of us will.” Claire had changed everything for us all, and I didn’t like it one bit.

He’s not my brother. I can’t believe the pain hasn’t sent me to my knees. That’s not Nathan face down in my bed cradling an empty bottle. That’s Sylar. I want him dead. He killed Nathan. I hate him, but I can’t destroy him. I know he’s holding Nathan’s memories. I know he’s wearing his face because of what Ma did to him. But I can’t let go of this scrap of my brother. When he mumbles my name in his sleep, I wonder if it’s Nathan or Sylar calling for me. If I love him, he could be Nathan.

“Nathan, I don’t know.”

“You want to, don’t you?” He gave me that smile that I can’t say no to. I don’t think anyone can. “How old are you?”

“I’m eighteen. I didn’t expect my birthday kiss to include tongue. You surprised me.”

“Yeah, I know.” He shifted closer to me, pulling me under his arm like he’d been doing since I was little. I closed my eyes, breathing in the scent that was all Nathan. His lips brushed over the top of my ear, and it made me shiver.

“What if we get caught?”

“They’ll die of heart failure.”

“But why can’t I go with you, Nathan?” I let out a big sigh and looked up at my big brother who was packing his suitcase for summer camp. “I did everything that dad and ma told you to do, so you could go. Not fair!”

“I know it’s not, Pete.” He crouched down next to me, and handed me something wrapped in a pillowcase. “I want you to take care of him for me while I’m gone, OK?”

I squeezed the pillowcase. I knew who was inside. “Really, Nathan?”

“I don’t want him to be afraid while I’m gone.”
